Undercoating Questions? We got the answers.

Undercoating Questions? We got the answers.

It’s that time of the year again and it seems to never end, even the groundhog agrees! Yes, the neverending snowstorms, plow trucks throwing snow right back on your driveway, and Connecticut drivers feeling too confident in their vehicle’s capabilities will continue for several more weeks. But we have some concerns of our own. Our team of auto professionals continue to ask our customers what they worry about in the winter. The responses are quite similar, cleaning up snow and getting in an accident. Well, we may know a good attorney but you’re neglecting to ask one important question; what the heck is being spread on Connecticut roads and how does it impact my car? The short answer–a mixture of sodium chloride and water that deices and melts the snow. These solutions are highly effective and Connecticut DOT does an excellent job in preventing catastrophic accidents with this solution. But there are serious consequences when road brine (salt or other solutions) gets in contact with the underside of your vehicle. Road brine is highly corrosive, no matter the age or model of your vehicle it remains highly vulnerable to premature corrosion that not only depreciates the value of your car or truck but also has an impact on the appearance of your vehicle. Want to stop this? We do too. That is why we have partnered with the friendly team at New Hampshire Oil Undercoating to deliver their engineered barrier of protection to Connecticut drivers. Their environmentally friendly solution will work wonders on your vehicle’s underbody, wheel wells, door panels, and more! So leave the corrosion prevention to us and have one less thing to worry about because there’s more snow in the forecast!

What do you do to prepare the car or truck?

We get this question a lot from customers. Undercoating a vehicle is quite tricky and it takes prime conditions. Our lead mechanic will not work on a vehicle if specific weather conditions don’t permit it. Dave, our lead mechanic, doesn’t want to jeopardize the quality of your undercoating application. That is why Dave will work closely with you before you arrive at our facility in Waterbury to ensure your vehicle is ready to be undercoated. The below recommendations should be followed before your service.

  • Wash the undercarriage of your vehicle-

Before your arrival, our team recommends you get an undercarriage wash at a car wash. There are several facilities in the greater Waterbury area. Not only are car washes inexpensive (around $8) but you’ll be doing your vehicle a favor by getting it a much needed clean. An undercarriage wash will remove debris, salt, or dirt from the underbody of your vehicle. With highly pressurized water being blasted at your metal components it will do your vehicle some justice when it’s time to undercoat. We recommend you get a car wash at least 12 hours before your service and avoid driving it after.

  • What we do-

Our lead undercoating specialist will carefully cover your vehicle with protective cloths and tarps to prevent any overspray. After your vehicle is undercoated, we will carefully wipe away any overspray that crept its way onto your vehicle. Don’t worry, this will not impact the paint of your vehicle. You can ask our lead mechanic for more details at (203) 527-6494

  • When your vehicle is on the lift-

When your car or truck is on our lift, our lead mechanic will thoroughly inspect all of your vehicle’s underbody components. We will make note of any corroded metals, and advise you of any necessary replacements or repairs before application. Our transparency guarantee is that you understand what we’re doing and how we’re doing it, you deserve to be in the loop. We can’t neglect the truth.

How long does it take to apply?

Depending on your appointment time, you may be able to get your vehicle within a few hours. Our comfortable waiting room has a wide variety of magazines and free wifi if you choose to wait. At certain times, our lead mechanic may invite you to observe how the oil solution is applied, of course socially distanced. To abide by state and federal guidelines on Covid-19, we use gloves, masks, and disinfectants when handling your vehicle. If you choose to leave your vehicle at our facility for the day or overnight you can rest knowing we have 24/7 surveillance and we’re right down the road from the Waterbury police department. Again, it can take a few hours depending on the make and model of your car or truck. Your best bet is to contact our lead mechanic at (203) 527-6494 to get the best possible answers on when you can schedule an appointment and how long it will take.

What is New Hampshire Oil Undercoating?

There are multiple ways to undercoat the underbody of your vehicle. Some options include wax undercoating and rubberized undercoating. Some undercoating services can cost thousands of dollars yet still be ineffective. We have found the team at New Hampshire Oil Undercoating highly skilled at what they’re trying to do when it comes to protecting vehicles from premature corrosion. NHOU is engineered to protect your car or truck from moisture year-round. NHOU is a refined food-grade mineral oil product that is both non-hazardous and non-flammable. Undercoating can protect your underbody from corrosion with your pocket in mind. We wouldn’t want to work with any other undercoating solution but NHOU. If you would like more information on NHOU, kindly visit their website.

How long does it last?

This is dependent on your driving habits, how frequently you wash your vehicle, and other outside factors that are out of everyone’s control. It is up to your discretion on how often you would like to undercoat your vehicle. Annual application only improves your protection but you may be able to undercoat every several years depending on the condition of your undercoating. Your best bet is to contact our team of trained auto mechanics to inspect the underbody of your vehicle every year to give you an update. If we deem your undercoating to be intact and you can hold off for another year. You may just need a few touch-ups but it’s best to ask our mechanic first. It’s always better to play it on the safe side.

When can I wash my car?

According to New Hampshire Oil Undercoating, you can wash your vehicle immediately after your service as their oil actively displaces water while creating a barrier of protection from corrosion. So yes, you can get a car wash right away!

Is it worth it?

Our team wouldn’t recommend undercoating your vehicle without believing in a product first. We proudly apply undercoating on our vehicles while also applying it on select vehicles we sell, especially some of our classic cars! Under no circumstances would we advise undercoating your vehicle when it’s not necessary. That is why our approach is to have you first call our facility and provide your vehicle details so that we can give you our best recommendation. In our professional opinion, why wouldn’t you want to take one more step in protecting your valued investment? Yes, some newer vehicles may have a pre-coated layer that should protect your vehicle but during manufacturing, these metals are exposed to conditions that may aid in developing spot welds, bends, and ultimately jeopardizing the integrity of the pre-coated material. Undercoating is the extra step drivers can take to avoid the process of replacing expensive parts or having to sell your car or truck for less than what its book value should be. Note: vehicle prices are extremely selective. Just because an online platform states your car or truck is worth something doesn’t mean it is. A qualified professional should properly appraise your vehicle and they will have to consider any rust as a factor in the value of your car or truck.
